About Us

One of OOR's Originals - Saucy Monky's "Celebrity Trash"

O O R - the labeL

Indie artist Cynthia Catania started olivoiL records in 1999.  The label has been a vehicle for music in the DIY spirit of Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records.  Since its inception, olivoiL has hosted dozens of live music events and has been home to LA artists Cynthia Catania, Saucy Monky, Paper Sun, Annmarie Cullen and The Secret Things. It began with Cynthia's eponymous EP, then a string of records by the favorite Irish-American band Saucy Monky.  Recently, OOR has released The Secret Things debut EP "Shock Diary" and various one-off singles by the Trio.

1930's toy piano, used on many of the OOR recordings.

Cynthia started making records in Los Angeles, alongside veteran sideman extraordinaire Tad Wadhams.  Those early sessions with Tad influenced Cynthia's recording aesthetics and technics. In the early 2000's, she began her career as a producer.  Her first full-length album, "Turbulence" by Saucy Monky, was picked up by 429 Records / Warner Bros and Scotland's Measured Records. Tracks from the bands' first two CD's, "Turbulence" and "Celebrity Trash"  hit the Irish airwaves and started the bands' exciting career abroad!  Cynthia continues to produce music for her projects, film and TV, and other select indie artists.  One of her more recent productions for The Secret Things, the single "Keeper," has been picked up by Loud Kult in Sweden, distributed by The Orchard / Sony Music.

New Music!

On July 6th, The Secret Things released their single “Bully” via iTunes and Spotify.  The bands new material has strong political content and commentary.  This track in particular, has an anti-Trump message.  “Si Se Puede” the ironic hook and backbone of the “Bully” choruses have a timely irony that points its finger toward the unfair treatment of Mexican immigrants, the un-safe passage into the US, and newly established practices that separate children from their parents.  The accompanying satirical lyric video, directed by Sue Ann Pien is out NOW! watch it HERE.

Steve Giles is a singer/songwriter originally from Eugene, Oregon and currently living in Los Angeles. After spending many years as a bassist and songwriter, he finally made the move to center stage and put his hat in the ring as a singer in 2016. Influenced by artists like Elliot Smith, Death Cab for Cutie and The Decemberists, his debut album It Always Snows in Greenland is full of ironic and sharp lyrics, an a full emotional range. His follow up This World And The Next (olivoiL records, release date 10/31/18) explores the themes of mortality, loss, longing and the elusive intersection of love and eternity. Both albums feature Steve’s composing, playing, singing, and programming.  Steve is currently working on new music with many outstanding musicians and bands in the LA area including: The Secret Things, The Obvious Wish, The Magnetic South, and Amy Hef.  Listen here.
